STEPHEN KING'S THE MIST (2007)

""We want the boy.""

Stephen King has done it again!!!!!! He took a very general story, and elongated it to become a fast paced thrilling read, and the movie does the same. Though I saw the film prior to reading the book. Still just as good, with the trademark twist ending that film makers have been recently adding to the endings of Stephen King's books.

The story is relatively simple in nature. A great mist pours down from the mountainside of____(Can't recall) and engulfs the town, with people getting eaten by monsters hiding within the mist. A couple dozen or more take shelter in a grocery store and find that they are trapped inside as the monsters unleash attacks on the store. But the deeply religious folk inside prove to be much more scary than the monsters outside.

Frank Darabont did a fantastic job at capturing the overall suspense that the story had, and he never missed a beat! He made sure that the drama was realistic, and that the monsters were real too, or at least the monsters that aren't focused on as much in the film. Though I only gave Frank 4 stars cuz while I haven't seen it a second time, I could tell that I'd not like it as much since this was one of those fast paced suspense thrillers that only does it for you the first time. For having known the story, then re-watching the film could only do so much for you. And reading the book afterwards felt the same way. It's similar to how "Saw" (2004) was thrilling at times, a mind puzzler, but on the second go round, it wasn't as good since you knew everything beat by beat.

Thomas Jane (The Punisher/Dreamcatcher) stars in the lead as (can't remember his name. I saw the film last on opening day, and read it in December, so it's been a while. remind me please, and I'll edit the review.) The man is a father of a young son that he wants to keep calm through the terror unfolding outside the grocery store, and keeps his wits about him the entire time. He's the one who hatches the scheme to escape the store before the crazed religious folk take total control. He ads to the suspense, but the acting was only so-so for me.

Marcia Gay Harden plays____(remind me please). She's the deeply religious character who believes that the coming of the mist is the sign of the end of days as described in the bible, and she quickly rounds up the sane, and quirky people in the grocery store to side with her, and every biblical thing that SHE says MUST be done to avoid a terrible fate. Her control grows throughout the film, and you're routing like mad for her to be killed off, but she just gets more and more powerful. And that is how the "civilized" religious people in the store seem more monstrous than the "uncivilized" monsters outside. Which of course was the overall message of the book, in that the most peaceful and civilized of sorts will be the ones prone to lose their minds much more quickly than the Average Joes of the town.

____(can't remember either) plays Ollie, an employee of the grocery store who is brave, sane, and quickly sides with Jane's character when he observes how crazy Marcia's character is, despite trying to reason with her peacefully. Ollie is further convinced by Jane's plan to escape when he sees that the severed tentacle in the back room looks nothing like the beasts described as arriving in the end of days (if there are supposed to be any monsters at all). You continually route for him throughout the film to triumph over the monsters...but not every wish comes true to perfection.

The drug store scene was probably the creepiest in the whole movie. No music. Just waiting for the giant spiders to strike!!!! It was the most creeped out I've been from a movie in a long time! Kudos to King!!!!!

The special effects were much better than "Dreamcatcher" as the monsters looked much more real and were depicted as being much more aggressive than the ones of that film.

The visuals go along with that, and served the story well. Especially in the drug store scene, and the venturing out into the mist scene in the climax.

Even Stephen himself liked the changed ending and said that if ANYONE revealed the ending prior to the film's opening that they should be killed!!!

Overall, this was a suspenseful movie that keeps your eyes glued to the screen beat per beat, but most likely won't be as entertaining the 2nd time around, hence the 4 star rating instead of 5 star rating.

Well, when Tom Hanks' character asked John Coffee what he'd tell God to justify killing one of his miracles, John said that it'd be a kindness since he can feel all the hate in the world everyday of his life, and can't take the emotional burden of everyone's problems, hence how he found the 2 girls in the beginning. He sensed their emotions and pain. And then killing him was also a reflection of the South at that time, and how evil whites were (and some still are) down there, and henceforth how unreal it would be for the guards to just let John Coffee run free, for it'd just be a regular ending that was nothing special, and neither Tom Hanks or Mr. Jangles woulda lived for another 70yrs or so. The story was a drama to say the least, and the one with the least amount of violence. None of it had to be fabricated cuz that was just how disgusting things like electrocution really was.

"IT" had a cheezy climax that didn't fit the creepiness of the story. "Carrie" sounds like a really stupid teenage revenge story via supernatural powers instead of the use of one's brain, like in "Rage" which was published under Richard Bachman (which he did for several stories that he didn't at first want to identify as being written by him), and is also his greatest regret in his writing career. But yeah, lots of them have this good creepy sense to them, and then they steer off in a totally different & supernatural direction that bugs me sometimes too.

Like I said, on my 1408 review, I only like some of his movies not to say Green Mile was bad, but for as much gore/violence/killings in movies I've seen I hate, hate to watch someone get electrocuted, its a horrible sight, and the movie ends on a negative, with Michael Clark Duncan dieing for a crime he didn't comment, but I guess you got to end a movie in differnt ways from time to time.

"It" was alright, and the reason I hate clowns, Carrie, Salem's Lot, Christian, The Shining, The Dead Zone, Silver Bullet, The Running Man, Thinner, The Night Flier, Storm of the Century are good too, but it's his crazy, unexplained happenings , and the way his stories veer off the road, to some weird place, make up my reasoning for why I can't give some of his movies higher than a 3.5, and the rest either aren't explained, don't make sense, or take to long to get to the action, to get higher than a 2, from me.

Oh yeah. They did add that feature to the DVD. How was it in comparison to the theatrical version? While you say it's great, is it better than the original version? Worse? Same? So-So?

Yeah. I agree. Though "The Green Mile" has got to be Stephen King at his best when it comes to dramas, for while all his stories have deep connections between the characters, (which are usually a group of childhood friends, but not always) that story had no connections until they started to accept that John Coffee was a gifted and overall generous person that they were convinced didn't kill the girls even before he showed them the truth. Michael Clarke Duncan was just amazing in the role, and Tom Hanks fit the bill too. Michael Jeter was really great though. It sucks that he died. I was looking forward to more of his movies.

I was tempted to look away from the screen when he got his legs busted, but didn't. And I didn't like the ending that much. Thought it coulda been a bit better.

Misery is an all time fav of mine!

Just cuz I only mentioned those few doesn't mean there's not more. Such as: Misery, The Stand, The Long Walk (great), The Green Mile (awesome), Pet Semetary, etc etc.

I read more than 1 book at once. And I'm currently reading both "IT" & "The Long Walk." I like King's writing style, and since I've seen some of the films listed, (such as "The Green Mile" which at first I didn't know was based on a King novel), I can tell that I'll like the novels as well. I've seen both "Misery," & "Pet Semetary." I'll probably check out "Salem's Lot" next based on what I believe V2K said about it. And another friend (who's the same one that's got Howard Hawkes' "thing from another world") told me loads about "The Stand," and is the one who lent me "The Long Walk." Based on the writing style, I can tell that I'd like a book of his after reading about it, and hearing about it, which so far is true, as "IT" is a good horror story, and "The Long Walk" is a good & fucked-up story.

The suspense in this film was good for me though.

Is this movie worth the watch if you only like a couple of Stephen kings movies, like Secret window, I'm not going to read it yet, its got important plot point spoiler in it, and its on my movies-to-watch list, but look good.
